Kylie: This is the Sewing Club Podcast, and I'm Kylie from Kylie and the Machine. And I'm Gemma from Sewing Gem. Sewing Club Podcast is a podcast like a book club, but for sewing. We've got to keep doing that now, Kylie. Of course, yeah, well we we nailed one. We love a bit of cheese at beginning and the end. So welcome everybody who's listening and everyone who's watching us on the YouTube channel. Bit of bit of a change. We're getting used to it. Yes. Loving having a bit of video, but it does mean thinking about a few other things. Yes. So it's good. We hope you're enjoying it. Yeah. If yeah, we'd like to know what you prefer, listening in your ears or watching us while listening, doing the same, I don't know, at the sewing machine. I feel like, ⁓ you know, with with what we're actually doing, which is effectively reviewing sewing patterns ⁓ most of the time. Or just sewing stuff. I do feel like video is kind of the way to go because we're talking about all of these things and expecting, you know, people to imagine this thing in their head but actually seeing it. You can't really be actually seeing the thing and seeing it on someone's body and what they've done. So hopefully it is just a really positive addition to the podcast. Yes. And like you said, just off air, we get to wear the pattern when we're talking about it. Which today is a pair of pants. So we're actually sitting in the pants. Yep. They're really pretty comfy pants. Very comfy. I'm feeling very comfy set here. ⁓ they are the kite pants. From Machi Machis. Yeah, Machi Machi Sewing Club. So yeah, it's another sewing club. Yes. One sewing club to another sewing club. That's right, that's right. Everyone's welcome. Yes. So let's well, for the people that are listening only, let's just describe the style of the pants. I mean, I have to start by saying, I love your pants, Carly. ⁓ thank you. They are so much fun. So if you are just listening, Carly has got ⁓ a sort of like a multicoloured kind of like thing going on with like pink and then blue panels. And they look like so much fun. It's a linen pair of pants she's made. ⁓ and they look like so much fun. So I call them my clown pants. Clown pants. They're very stylish clown pants, if they are clown pants. Thank you. And yours look like a completely different vibe, of course. And yours are like a lightish denim with the orange top stitches. That's right. I ⁓ have two different versions of these, very much so. And I did make them originally in a different fabric, which I'll talk about again in a ⁓ later on. ⁓ very different. So you can get quite a different sort of look with these pants. So yeah. So they're elastic waisted. Yes. And they have some really nice ⁓ lines. Instead of having just one front and one back, there's a third panel at the side. Yeah. And it's a slightly balloony leg, but not overly balloon. Kind of barrel-y kind of legged. ⁓ the slightest. Balloon is probably the wrong word. B barrel. Barrel, a good barrel. A slight barrel leg. Slight barrel. very comfy, easy to wear. ⁓ but yeah, a side panel, which sort of helps to give them their shape. ⁓ lots of pockets. Two front sort of ⁓ slash pockets and then two kind of funky patch pockets at the end. And they're a bit different, aren't they? The kind of the angling and everything of them is a bit different. I really like them. And I ⁓ on the way here popped my phone in the back pocket and it fit perfectly. So excellent. So it's a good sign. Yes, well I haven't actually used mine much because I actually just finished putting the elastic in this morning. ⁓ wow, there's nothing like last minute, but you know. hot off the hot off the sewing machine. I love it. Well just the elastic part. Yeah, that's okay. That's okay. And did you find the elastic part okay? Well, I had issues with the elastic, but that was just because of what I had in my elastic st stash. I didn't really have the exact right. So you had to kind of make it work. Had to make it work, yes. We we were actually talking in the office about how you MacGyver something. And then we were trying to think of like a feminine version of that. Like What's the female equivalent? Because we don't want to keep referring to this guy. Yeah. But we couldn't think of anything. So maybe we maybe the listeners could come up with something. But yes. Sometimes I mean that's what about sewing's about. Like you gotta make things work. You do use what you've got. And you know, I didn't wanna go to the shop and get elastic because I just didn't want to. Well, let's be honest. It's not the cheapest thing. I think people often get into sewing because they think it's going to be this they're gonna save money somehow. ⁓ So when you can, you know, save a few few dollars, it's worth doing for sure. But hobby saves you money. Yeah, that's true. Yeah. I was you have to enjoy the process. We've said this so many times, right? You have to be, you know, into the process. So But we really want to keep this podcast free. Yes. So you can listen to it and it costs you nothing. Yeah, absolutely. But what you could do in return is ⁓ subscribe on either one of the listening apps. Yep. ⁓ or subscribe to our YouTube channel because ⁓ it would be really great if we could get this out to more people and ⁓ yeah. So we'd love love to have you all come join us. Do all the things, please. Thank you so much. Maybe we should do a quick twirl of our pants for the people that are watching. Yes, because you can't really see them when you're sitting down. That's true. Do you wanna go first? ⁓ I was gonna say you go first. All I'll go first. Let's get it out of the I'll let I'll let you do this. Did you crop yours? ⁓ sorry, you don't have a microphone right now. I'll take it in a minute. ⁓ see, they fit you really well. ⁓ Gemma's ⁓ yeah, it's like a medium blue denim with really nice, very neat top stitching in like, you know, that golden jean colour. And I know that you made a twelve, so that must have you you may have made a couple of little tweaks to make them fit you perfectly. I did. So with the first pair I made, they were a really kind of relaxed like chambre, so floaty kind of fabric. and then when I didn't make any changes with those. I didn't need to because the fabric was so drapey. But with these, I did need to make some changes, mainly around the crotch area because it was quite long on me and I felt ⁓ yeah, a bit low. and it just needed to be, with the fabric being a little bit firmer and a bit more structured, it needed to be a little bit of a better fit on my at least I felt that way anyway. Yeah. When you get a little bit more structure in the fabric, you need yeah. Yeah. You need the fit to be more spot on. Exactly. Exactly. And should I do a twelve? I think you should. Yeah. So Kylie's pants are like a baby blue and like a kind of like a salmon pink, let's say. ⁓ and the stripes are alternating. So you've obviously got the side panel is a different colour to the front panel, and then the pockets are different again. So it they look really cool. They're made out of a nice lightweight linen with a fancy pants label on, which I'm loving. Of course, very neat top stitching. I was saying to Kylie the other day, I think she should do a denim kind of like, you know, masterclass on tips for Top stitching. We have to move to cover it on the podcast one time, Carl. Yeah, yeah, you keep saying that. But I don't think I'm an expert at it. That's But you do it very well. Yeah. I feel like I just kind of, yeah, just make it work. I definitely get frustrated in the process of making jeans. They're not easy. Do you think it's just practice makes perfect? Or do you have some actual good tips for us? I've I've definitely picked up a lot of tips along the way that I just think are second nature now. I've got a few pairs that have cut out since last winter, so I might sew them up in another sojo episode and then I can bring some more tips. What do you think? I think that's a great idea. I would love that personally. I don't know about everyone else, but I would love that. So please do. Okay, fine. I'll put that on my list. Yeah. Your very long evolving list. Yes. Well this weekend coming up, I've got actually got quite a lot of time. I could sew. Okay. Well make a list of tips for us as you go. Okay, I will. I'll try and film some of it as well. I I di unfortunately didn't film any of the making of this because I thought it was a bit of a whirlwind. And they came together so easily and just, you know, I I got into the flow and then bing bang boom. Yep. Had a pair of pants. Nice. They are a really nice, easy make. I think they're a great pair of pants for beginners. Yes. With the elasticated waist. Definitely. ⁓ not really tricky bits. No. Well, maybe l one tricky bit, but that's you can manage. Yeah, absolutely. And I think ⁓ Machi Machi Sewing Club, like their patterns are fairly straightforward, most of them. I mean, they're obviously going to be, ⁓ you know, different ab abilities or different levels within those patterns. But ⁓ yeah, I think they're a really good place for beginners to start. Yeah. And people that are wanting to be a bit creative as well, because a lot of their patterns have lots of different panels and seams and they kind of lend themselves to mixing fabrics together. And creating, you know, very unique one of kind pieces. So if that's your jam Absolutely I think that, you know, you'll find heaps to play around with. And using up scraps as well. Such a great we talked about this in a previous podcast, like good scrap busting. If you can use a bit of this, a bit of that, then yeah. ⁓ you haven't seen the book, have you? No. I brought it along. We should I bring it up now or later? Well, I was just wondering, should we should we talk about speaking with Amy? Yeah, well we spoke to Amy and Teresa. Yes. That was that was really fun. It was great to get to speak to them, wasn't it? Yeah, totally. So, you know, a lot of the time we ask the designers where they get the names from, ⁓ for their pattern company and the pattern that we're reviewing. We were interested to find out about the naming of Machi Machi and also the ⁓ the pattern itself. Matchy Matchy, yeah, Matchimachie was just kind of on a whim when we were very first starting this. Actually, before we even were like, let's try making a pattern, I was gonna do like a sewing blog of like just the stuff that we were, you know, sewing and you know, so it was somewhere else besides Instagram and like, you know, maybe make it more of a community thing. ⁓ and I just kind of like picked matchy matchy out of thin air. ⁓ because I liked that it like rhymed and it was kind of like cute and fun. and it just has stuck and evolved with us, I think. I think we like evolved to the name. Yeah in a way. Totally. Totally. So there wasn't a ton of thought behind that, but I feel like it has made sense as we've grown. Yeah. And the kite pants, we typically try to name our patterns after the silhouette of the can't and we think it's reminiscent of a kite shape and it's very like free yeah just something like easy breezy, you know, not not restrictive at all, fun to wear. So yeah playful. I do feel they are nice and breezy. Yeah. Easy to wear. And I get that kite shape as well. They've got that kind of look to them. So it does make a lot of sense. I think they're they're well named. Yeah. One other thing I like is that there's two of them. Like how the two of us. Yes. And that works with the matchy matchy thing as well, right? Yeah. That's cool. And ⁓ you know, ⁓ sometimes people meet, you know, working in together like they met working together in another company and then they were just friends sharing about their sewing and then they eventually started their own sewing company. So I think that's really cool. Yeah, it's it's kinda like us. It's it's kind of evolved naturally, as you say, just like us. It was yeah, it was cool. Yeah. I think it's easier to Well, not easier. I think it's just more momentum when you are doing something with someone else because, you know. Well, you can kind of like almost it sounds almost like fill in each other's gaps. Does that make sense? Because keeping everything moving when you're you're you know, you're on your own is is can be really hard. Yes. And I think, you know, sometimes if one of you sort of like drops the ball a bit. This if there's someone else to catch the balls, if you know what I mean. Yes. ⁓ then it kind of just keeps everything moving along. That's right. That's right. Yeah. And I guess everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. And then you've got to find a a a pairing where you have sort of some opposites and some similarities so that you can make things work because you can't all be one way or one other way. Yeah. You just be butting heads, right? Yeah, exactly. ⁓ so it's good to kind of like, yeah, make a Make an awesome team, I guess. Yeah, teamwork. Yeah, teamwork. Woo. There's just a lot of you know, designers that we do talk to that are kinda like a one woman at home by themselves. And I I don't know, I don't think I could work that way. I think I'd just lose, you know, steam, I guess. Yeah. Yeah. I think I I mean, you know, I guess it would be a bit lonely at times, I think. And, you know, you'd sort of have to qu you it's nice to thr you know, throw ideas around and get feedback and ⁓ so yeah, I mean Kudos to those women that are doing everything themselves. and yeah, maybe, you know, you and your friend want to start something and you know, go for it, basically. So there are two versions of the pattern. There's obviously version A and then there's version B, which is We both made A. We both made A. It's ⁓ version B is very similar, but it's quilted. ⁓ and a lot of their patterns does or ⁓ has quilting in, ⁓ or patchworked, I should say, sorry. ⁓ and we are we wanted to know a bit more about which one came first and which is their favorite. ⁓ I think the view A was first, just like the traditional view. and then we happened to be working on the homebody jacket at the same time, which is a quilted jacket. So we were thinking like, ⁓ what if we had a h entire quilted outfit? Let's see if we can make a quilted version of the kite pants. So that kind of developed Next. and they're really fun and they're really cozy to wear. Like it it really feels like you're wearing a whole entire quilted getup and it's really nice. Yeah, it's like a sleeping bag in there. Yeah. But mm-hmm. Yeah. I think we somehow got addicted to quilting garments at that tiny moment in time and everything we did was let's quilt it. It's so true. There's not too many differences when you're quilting it. It's just about the the sort of the finishes, right? Yeah, exactly. A lot of binding. Yeah. I just I think quilting, patchworking, I I I worry about getting the right combination of fabrics together. ⁓ I haven't done a lot of quilting. I know you've done a little bit. I think I was never really into quilting because my mum has made me so many beautiful quilts at home. Yeah that I kind of thought, I don't really need any more quilts. You skipped that part and went straight to the garment sewing. I just went straight to the garments. But it does come up in garment sewing. So I d you know, I should I should probably embrace it a bit more. But I just I don't think I'd wear a pair of quilted pants. I just don't think that we don't we don't have the winter for No, we don't. And w wearing that inside you might even be a bit hot potentially, you know. Yeah. Yeah. And you'd have to get the fit really, really right because ⁓ you know, these kind of elastic wasted pants are very forgiving and they you know, I feel like These are kind of secret pajamas, you know? I would agree. ⁓ so I don't think you'd I think it'd have to tweak a lot. I th I wouldn't make the first pair quilted anyway. No, I think get the fit right in the in version A and then move on to if you really love the idea of a a quilted pair, then move on to version B. And I mean, I don't do you have any tips for us, Kylie. You've done a bit of quilting. You know, when you're trying to match those fabrics together, do you lay them all out and see what goes with what? Or, you know, how do you how do you mean when you're piecing? When you're piecing it and deciding which fabrics to use. Yeah. I mean, when you're in the quilting, you know, headspace and you're following a lot of quilting accounts and you're seeing new it's just like garments, like they'll bring out a new quilt pattern and they'll have all these beautiful samples, or ⁓ fabric company will put out their the new range of fabrics and then it's like, ⁓ I know I need those fabrics. And then you're trying to find something to make from those fabrics. And a lot of them come in like a set. Right. Like ⁓ you know, a company will be like, this is this set and it's called this. And you basically could use all of those together. ⁓ but then a lot of matchy matchy looks like they've really curated the pieces and they've found like stripes and, you know, dots and really thoughtfully put things together. It's a lot of it it sort of reminds me of like Ace and Jig. Do you know Ace and Jig? They're like a American ⁓ company that have like a lot of quilties things. I've heard of them. I'm not familiar, but am I right in thinking what you're describing there when a company puts out a set of fabric is like a jelly roll or something like Well that's like one version of what they do. Okay. So they're you have the yardage. It's more like a collection of these fabrics all go together and they might put out a collection of solids. that ⁓ also go with that or something. So you you can use the prints and the solids together and, you know, you're creating sort of shapes and patterns with the the shapes that you're cutting out. And then you Yeah, so there's a lot to think about. Because you've also I don't know about garments though. I think with garments you have to l be a little bit more thoughtful. You can't you know, like a quilt on a bed, you could go all out and put like all the coolest things you can find together or just stick with one I feel if you're gonna do garments, you either really have to curate it or you ⁓ have to like stick to a colour palette maybe. but you know, there's no rules. You also then have to think about the weight of the fabric. Because when you buy those collections of fabric that a company might say, you know, these will go together. They're all often just quilting cottons, so the same weight. But then when you when you start, you know, going through your scrap bucket, ⁓ trying to match the weights of, you know, the ray on top with the Yeah, I wouldn't I'm using an extreme example there. But you know, sometimes matching those things together. If it's all linens, then great, you know. But it's not always necessarily going to be the same weight of fabric. And sometimes it's called batting in in different countries. And sometimes you don't even need to have that middle layer if you're wanting a lighter quilt like you could make quilted pants that just have the top pieced part and then the backing and then nothing in between. And I feel like that might actually work really well, particularly for our climate. Yes. ⁓ I I sound like I feel like we're trying to put people off doing the quilting bit, which we shouldn't because they look really funky. Yes. But ⁓ yeah, maybe just make sure you're really giving it some thought in terms of your your fabrics that you're gonna put together. And what you're gonna wear with maybe. Yeah. Because something fairly neutral. Yeah. Well, I mean Or you're gonna go for the whole quilted pants. And then just go all out because you're already wearing quilted pants, so you may as well just go for it. Just go for it because that's very unique, you know. Yeah. I feel like I can't I don't know, I haven't I haven't tried these on with too many different things, but I just grabbed this top because I thought it's also linen, it's a bit more neutral. And I love this top so Yeah, I love it. Yeah. And I think these shoes are a little bit too much with it. No, I think that it's all about the shoes with the pants. I love it. I'm wearing different socks today. They're not the sewing club socks. ⁓ what do they say? They are the k they're Kylie and the machine socks and they say I'd rather be sewing. ⁓ I love it. Very cool. It's definitely the same we have them left. But ⁓ Yeah, hopefully we get some new socks before the end of the year. Cool. That's exciting. Watch this space, hey. Yeah. We'll see. We did ask them if there was a fabric that's their favorite to make the pants out of. I feel like people do such fun ones. I love it when they do like all people do all scraps. I think those like turn out so cool. ⁓ with like, you know, crazy bunch of different things and then you can just wear like a white tee or something with it. I think those are really fun. And I've seen people who do like trim, like sandwiched in between. ⁓ the seams that look really cool. Like somebody did piping in all of the scenes that was like insane. I'm like, wow, that's really cool. Piping would be really cool. Yeah. Piping would be cool. I have to say, because of the creativity of other people making these pants before me, it inspired me to be more creative with this pair of pants. Yeah. But I was also inspired by the fact that I didn't have enough of either one of these fabrics to make the full Pant. So I just put the two pieces of fabric together and cut out Love it. One of everything. And they match are they the same fabric but a synergy in colour? Yeah, that's it kinda works, you know. It's a heavyweight ish linen. Yeah. ⁓ from the fabric store. They don't make it anymore. Okay. So I yeah, I couldn't get any get any more anyway. And I just happen to have a meter of each of these. I don't know why I bought a meter of these. what can you do with a meter? I think I must have been Buying them to make mule totes because you can make a mu a big mule tote from one meter. Makes sense, makes sense. Well, I I mean I love it. I love the creativity. Almost feel very boring here in my denim pair. Yes. But again it's No, no. So I I said yes. But but it's it's it's ⁓ it is. But it's it's also, you know, it's that thing when you sew about making things that you wanna wear, right? That you know well, not that you want to wear, but that you know you're gonna wear because they kinda go with stuff. I'm eyeing off yours going, I wish I had ones like that. Yeah. But they're boring compared to yours, but I know I could just put a white t shirt on with them and I'm you know, or or anything really with it. Although you're wearing an Ashton top right now. I am wearing them. What is a very Plain white ashton top, but I was, you know, it just kinda goes. But I did have a blue top that I tried to wear with it before I came out, and it was just a bit too much blue. I was doing the dress like a crayon. I was like, no, we can't dress like a crayon. I had ⁓ picked my Ashton top too. Too? Yeah, I had it out. And then I haven't shaved my armpits. So you're like, no, long sleeves today. Brilliant. TMI. Yeah, no, we we like to share with them regardless of You choose what you're choosing, right? It's like do I have the right bra for that? Do you know it's a life? Yeah. But yeah, I think yeah. I don't know. I gotta I think I wanna make a top to go with them. And what are you thinking? Maybe like a stripe like a black and white stripe or like a different colour, like a I don't know, some kind of stripe would look cool, maybe. Or maybe it's a bit clowny. Get more clowny. I don't know. Speaking of clowny, I did this isn't exactly how I wanted to do the panels. I was gonna do well, I you know, I showed you I'd coloured it in. Yes, I I did some colouring. You for the good thing about ⁓ printing out the pattern, you know, instructions is you can colour it in and have a play. Yeah, you should show it. I didn't follow either one of these. Is that because of the fabric that you had or No, it's just because ⁓ well I so I was gonna do this panel pink, this panel blue, this panel pink. But when I did it, I didn't like how it looked. Because I think it was just a bit too much. I didn't like the stripe at the side. Got you. And I thought, ⁓ I wanted to change the colour here because then I can see it from the front. Yes. But then from behind, it just looks like two different. coloured legs, which is fine, but I wanted to see all the four color like the four different panels on the front. I think you've done it really well. I think that makes a lot of sense. So yeah. Yeah. Good job. So I actually did a bit of unpicking. Why? Well because I blew it. ⁓ you actually put them together and then went actually. I pulled one leg and I looked at it and I was like, ⁓ no. Okay. So did you then have to recut any pattern pieces or could you just move them around? Well luckily because this is very double sided, I just sort of flipped it around. Yes. Makes sense. Speaking of flipping around, one of the good tips that they gave us was about this center piece. Yes. Should we talk about this now? Yeah, l let's do it. I think it's important. This is the cent the side pant leg. And ⁓ mark your notches. Yes. real good notches in this pattern. Yeah. Very happy with the notches. But you need to put them on. This yeah, I put mark on mark top of fabric. I feel like that I would actually even just right at the top of that when you're cutting it out top. Yeah, top. And and then when I made them again, this pair, because I already made a pair, I actually just put T at the top of the panel. Or so you know something that signifies this is gonna go at the top. Yes. What I do is I actually keep the paper with the fabric. Until you and I fold it all up and then I just grab each bit 'cause yeah, I don't know. Yeah, I don't know why I did that. Do you do that? Yeah, I do. I keep the pattern piece on it for as long as possible. But then as I was doing my notches I just marked a little T as well. I thought, you know, I know I can see how easy it would be to f to flip this. Yes. 'Cause if you weren't looking at this and because it's not a normal pattern piece shape, right? It's kind of it's got the barrel well yeah, it's got the barrel sort of at the bottom of the leg and then it's more skinny at the top and I think instinctually you might think that the wider parts at the top, but it's the more narrow part of the top. Yeah. And you know, what you've got to remember is if you do attach it incorrectly and then move on to the next step which is top stitching, you're gonna have a ton of unpicking. Especially if you've overlooked it too, right? ⁓ gosh, that would be terrible. Top stitching, overlocking and stitching. Yes. So I didn't do that. I I just did the stitching part and then I un I had to un st unpick two long lines of stitching. I'm feeling the pain for you if you did have to do all of that, but I'm glad that's easy. You can just whip whip those out. Yep. And I was just, you know, watching, listening to something. So it wasn't too bad. No. I I think that's my top tip actually for unpicking. It's like rather than I I think sometimes if you've got a lot of unpicking to do, just leave it. Wait until you're front in front of the T V watching something a little bit mindless or, you know, easy to watch and do it then. I 'cause I can f sometimes find that unpicking can feel very frustrating 'cause you just want to get on with it. ⁓ so it's almost better just to leave it till you're in a much c a calmer place. Yes. You need to escape. Your your mind needs to escape somewhere else so that you can do the dirty work. And and if you're trying to get something done quickly, which is usually me, ⁓ because you're like, I want to get this done, you know, sometimes if you've made a mistake, that's kind of your call to say, Okay, have a b have a break now, you know, and rather than soldering on because often we end up then potentially making more mistakes. So it's we've all been there. Get this done, I wanna wear it. Thanks, you know. And then it just ends up being like, ⁓ I had a little mishap. ⁓ did you? It wasn't my fault. so I was I I I had constructed one of the legs. You know how you construct one leg first and then you construct the other legs, which is great for beginners to learn how to to put pants together that way. and I was really pushing it with the time, and my cats were like, hmm. Hello, human, it's time for dinner. And I was like, I'm not finished this side of the pants yet. So just wait. And then they were hello. And they were really and then they would jump, they jump, one of them jumped up on the iron board because I was ironing, like, hello, feed me. And then I said shoo. And then he did shoo, but he also caught my pants with his. nail and took the pant with him and I was like, ⁓ my gosh. And when I picked it up, I saw there was a big pull ⁓ in the fabric. But it was actually on the inside in the pocket area the pocket bag. Like you know, this bit. And then so you can't see it. ⁓ that's great. At all. He he managed to position his his claw well. Yes. And then I decided I have to put one of these labels in, which is my cat helped yeah make this brilliant helped being the very key word there because that was not helpful. Do you have those do you have those labels for sale or they're calendar? Okay. Yeah, they're a really popular one and they're just you know, we were out of stock for a while and then now they're back in stock. But yes. Do you have anything dog related? No, and that's the thing I was going to ask you because you have a dog. I have What's your dog's name? Tilly. She's a little cavoodle. She's very cute. ⁓ she's like my third baby. Does she help you so? She does lay all over the clothes. So I have like a little pull out bed in my sewing room for if people we need an extra space for when people come to stay. ⁓ and that tends to be a bit of a dumping space. So she just sort of lays all over the clothes and things like that and, you know, will actually actively sit on top of the fabrics and the clothes and she doesn't get in your way. If it's dinner time she will come and pour me. If if it's 'cause and she knows when it's six o'clock she's like bang on. Yes. No more sewing and she'll pour me and pour me until I feed her. So she just Kind of help, but she doesn't she doesn't have that you know how cats kind of jump up on iron boards and see she can jump up on the little futon, but she doesn't really come right up on the ironing board. She's all about the same size as a cat, but yeah. Well I just wondered because people when we did the cat labels and people was like, ⁓ we need the same thing for For dogs and like, They don't really it's not the same. When I say helped, I really mean like you got up in my business and like made the whole thing way more difficult than it needed to be. Yeah. Because you're so inquisitive and you wanted attention or you wanted food or something like that. I'm sure. I'm sure there are dogs like that, but my dog doesn't only if it's food time and then and then she's ⁓ she might bring me her ball and then put it on top of where I'm buying something else or something like that. But not quite the same. Yeah, well if your dog helps you in mm in this way, I just wanna know how I just don't know if it's like the right thing to make because it's like I don't know how many people are gonna People Yeah, I just don't I like we need a different dog phrase for the label rather than a than a that. But but it's like what. So I'll think on that. And the problem is that there's so many different dogs and there's so many like cats even though They are they are a bit different from each other, but it's they're more similar to each other than they are than dogs are. Agreed, completely. You've got to just use a cavoodle, obviously. Yeah. Well that's a that's one of the most popular dogs I see when I walk around. So I mean, I don't know if it's the same worldwide, but it probably is because they look like little teddy bears. Yeah. they call them something else in other parts of the world, they them a cava poo. ⁓ okay. Yeah. Cavoodle, cava poo. Yeah. I have sat for someone that has one of those and So lovely. Yeah. Yeah. She was a little bit naughty. I mean, she wasn't naughty. She just wasn't disciplined. But she was very cute. Yeah. And my kids were asking me for one for a while. And then I was almost I was looking and I'm like, No, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. Getting carried away. No. Yeah. No. Yeah. I was just a bit neurotic, but that's that's okay. Anyway. Back to the past. Back to sewing. Back to sewing. Well, ⁓ I ordered this on Amazon. It's the matchy matchy sewing book. Which is really cool. Exciting. And it has twelve patterns in there. And ⁓ yeah, Hijemma. You haven't seen it? It's amazing, I haven't. It just came. It's actually such good value for a book to get that many sewing patterns. And then I imagine as well, obviously this is the first time I've looked inside, but there's also some amazing tips. Yeah, great. Yeah. Brilliant. They've done a great job of that book. They have. It's really the illustration I'll just do a quick flick on this page. But the ⁓ illustrations and instructions and everything are really Really nice and clear as well. Yeah. And in c like colour as well. Yeah. So w how do they get hold of the pattern? ⁓ I think that you scan something and then you can download it. Let me have a have a quick flip. Yeah, 'cause most sewing books have like that giant sheet. Yes. That has all the p patterns sort of nestled on top of each other and then you gotta sort of trace it and it's a bit difficult, but yeah. I'm loving the colour charts. They got good aesthetic. Yeah, that they can there's lots of guidance in here with putting your colours and everything together. yeah, that's what I cool. Most ⁓ yeah, we're both wearing cool colours. Have you ever had your colours done? No. No. No, but ⁓ yeah, I I'm scared because I'm sc I'm scared they're gonna say that it's the opposite of everything in my wardrobe and then I'm gonna be like, ⁓ Mm. But maybe I like maybe I am instinctually doing the right thing. I don't Well AI did my colours and yeah, I don't know how accurate it was 'cause when I came back and said I don't agree with that that he then he, she, whatever it is edited it to be what I wanted, you know, 'cause ⁓ I was like he's like, No, no black for you and I was like, ⁓ everyone can wear black. What is this? You know, ⁓ It's not even a colour. I know, exactly. And then he was like, Okay, okay, Gemma, you can You can wear black. I was like, how accurately is pandering to you now. Back to the book. This is yeah, this is amazing. So are you gonna make anything out of it, Kylie? I really like the top that's on the front cover. It's like ⁓ well it's we're out of season for that, but that just looks like a nice, easy, breezy top that you could wear in the summer that would let in lots of air and it looks like you can mix and match fabrics and yeah, you could use scraps for that, and it's very much their ⁓ vibe. Is what I thought. We should probably mention as well, if you're in other parts of the world, that it's there's different covers for the book because we chatted them about that, didn't we? ⁓ and that this, you know, so if you're it's the same book, it's just got a different front cover. Yes. So yeah, that's really exciting. I think that it'd be really good for beginners. It's yeah, it's great for beginners for sure. Yeah. Very clear. Like that a lot. I really love the vibe of ⁓ the Machi Machi Sewing ⁓ club and like basically what Amy and Teresa kinda like are all about. And they're just so encouraging. Yeah, really encouraging. Just to make it easy on yourself. There's no like right or wrong way really to do things, we think. As long as you find a way that works for you, then that's cool. You don't have to like follow all the instructions exactly to a T. As long as you have a finished item that is wearable and that you enjoyed making, then that's awesome. Like we Try to teach you or show you one way, but there's so many different ways and d different approaches to sewing that might be more enjoyable for you. And we encourage everybody to practice many ways and discover the format that they like the best. Cause ⁓ just don't get frustrated with sewing. Take your time and enjoy the process. Good advice. Yeah, take your time and enjoy the process. I like that. Yeah, definitely. And if you do that, you'll end up with a pair of pants. Yeah. Yeah, that's cool. How long do you reckon it took you to ⁓ to make yours? They're pretty quick. Yeah. The top stitching definitely added ⁓ a bit more time to them than they would if you just like didn't bother with those little details. I guess like the pockets and things they're a little bit more fiddly, but I reckon in a couple of hours. Yeah, I think a couple of hours too. They go together so nicely. But we always we I I get Couple of hours, couple A couple of hours, ⁓ I don't know. Cause you are, you're in the process, right. And also when you chunk it up, it's really hard to know exactly how long it's taken. So I would cut them one day, leave them and then I think I did I ⁓ yeah. I wasn't including cutting. Okay, cool. Yeah, well definitely two hours then. I reckon I cut them and I did the top stitching on my front and my side panel together. And then the next day I came and I put the back panels on and then the next day I did the waistband. So that you know, that gives you an idea. I probably was doing like forty minutes sewing each time. That's how you get everything done so well. You're shrunking. Yeah, yes. Yeah. You always finish before me. I tr I try I think I just fr we've talked about this, I know, but I freak out more with deadlines than probably you do. I think you probably need do you need a deadline? I do freak out. But but you you see you stay calm at the last moment. No. I wouldn't be able to do it. What are you talking about? You're very calm. I look like I'm calm, but inside I'm like ⁓ my god, I gotta do this thing and I haven't even started up again. Well, you're fooling everyone, I reckon. Yeah. No, I I think I'd be like if if it was like the day of the podcast and I hadn't made the thing, I don't think I'd be able to make the thing because I would be so like I would just be like, That's it, I can't do it. We're not doing the podcast, you know. Whereas you just That's what I'd like Seriously. I love it. You're not really there. You always do it. That's the thing. Yeah, if I didn't have a team around me being like You can do it. You can do it. You can do it. I don't know. But yeah, yeah. You're good at, you know, doing a little bit here and just l doing a little bit here. But then you'd made one pair and then the second pair is really well I made the second pair, yeah, exactly. And you do get quicker, I think. And I made the second pair after we spoke to Amy and Teresa because their advice was well, their favourite fabric was a more structured fabric. Yes. And it got me thinking, I was like, ⁓ I've made them out of a really drapey fabric. I really want to see these pants ⁓ in a firmer fabric because they talked a lot about the shape and it just made a lot of sense to me. And I was like, yep. So when I made these, I I definitely I definitely prefer them in a firmer fabric. The only thing I would say with the elasticated waist in a firmer fabric. I'm probably in like I'm if I'm making it in a firmer fabric, I probably do also prefer less of an el not an elasticated waist. Because I think I think it's okay in these, but you wouldn't want to go much thicker in terms of the fabric. No. Because it becomes quite chunky. Well I do have a tip for you if this is the case because I found that none of the elastic I had was sort of Firm enough or strong enough or whatever. ⁓ and like I said, I didn't want to go to the shop. So I got two bits and zigzagged them together. Like so it's literal double thickness. Yeah, great idea. And the other thing I if you had firmer fabric and you needed more like yes pulling in. Yes. Because of the tension. Yeah, makes a lot of sense. ⁓ and you gave me this idea. So when I made this pair, you know when you do the waistband you fold in the inside to hide the the raw edges, you don't have any exposed overlocking or anything like that. Yeah. Well I didn't do that with this. I just overlocked the inside edge of the waistband and folded it over because it would have been yet another fold on the inside and it was gonna get very thick. Yeah. So I'm really glad I did that. I think that that works better. Basically the overlocking is like that. So it's not so pretty on the inside. Well, there's already overlocking on the inside anyway, right? Yeah, exactly. And and it just is a bit flatter. It's a bit less bulk if you're working with a really thick fabric. I like I told you that I was planning on maybe making a white c very light corduroy. I'm kinda like over corduroy. ⁓ yeah. I've been sorry, too corduroy lately. ⁓ yeah, of course you've just finished yeah, yeah. Yes. And like you know, all the things I've sewn this year. There's so much quartering. But yeah, I I think I'd do the same. Yeah. Okay. Cool. That's good. I'm glad we're in agreement. And thank you for the tip 'cause it definitely helped me. I did it exactly how they say in the in the instructions. And I use glue to hold it in place so that I didn't have to worry about pins and not catching it. Yeah. Because yeah, I didn't want to have and stitching in the ditch, right? I find that stitching in the ditch with my industrial machine is way more difficult than with my Bernina because you know Bernina feet have that line. Yeah. Like the actual stitching line. Well, the when we recorded the last episode episode, I talked a bit about having a foot and having that's so important to have those lines and those things to follow. Yes. yeah. Cause the industrial is just like two sort of like fork. It's like a little fork type of thing. And you just can see where it's gonna go. But you really have to just kind of guess where the needle's gonna end up. And when you're stitching in the ditch, it's like very precise. Yeah. So did you stitch in the ditch or did you edge stitch? I stitched in the ditch. Because the instructions say edge stitch, right? Well yes, but I yes, well that's right. I did, I guess, d move away from the But I think that you you moved away by what, two mil? Yeah, because I needed because I needed three millimeters? Yeah, because I needed to make it work for the elastic that I had. Okay. So was it a th ⁓ Smaller, wider elastic. I guess ⁓ yeah, I guess it was a little bit wider. I found my elastic, which was thirty eight millimetres, was a little bit snug when I fed it through, particularly with my ⁓ I should go and get my other pair. Yes. Should I go grab them? ⁓ yeah, she brought them along. ⁓ they're much flowier. So here we're very, very flowy. I didn't have to worry about the crotch or anything like that or making any real adjustments because they're just kind of really easy to wear and really soft. But you don't see the shape or the details. Yeah. And I guess I use a darker fabric and everything. but ⁓ yeah I did f I did find on this pair feeding through the elastic at one point I just obviously had a very slightly snug area and I had to just, you know, unpick and and and sort that area out. So ⁓ you know, it happens to the best of us, don't worry, if that happens to you, but just make sure you've got enough room to get your elastic through. Yeah, well that's why, you know, before I stitched it down and it was all folded and sort of ready, I looked at I got my elastic and I sort of put it there and I thought, yeah, that's That's gonna be tight. So that's why I decided to stitch in the ditch. Yeah. No, I think that was a good call. Give you a little bit more room to play around. Well, Machi Machi told us they have some very exciting news and ⁓ I wish I was in California. I know, I know. ⁓ yeah, they they're opening a bricks and mortar space. Woohoo. I think it will be a shop, but it will also be a kind of like creative space for people to be able to go and sew and they have fabrics and they're gonna be able to like Print patterns. I have a a big printer for printing A zero patterns and yeah, like sewing space for people as well, which is really cool. And they're dipping their toe in the water in terms of being able to well, they're going to be offering one of their patterns, ⁓ the ⁓ collage top, I believe, in a printed version as well. So they're gonna see how that goes, but they're they're gonna be offering that too. So that's really exciting. Lots of very exciting, yeah. I hear a lot of shops closing, so it's really awesome to hear about shops opening. I I completely agree. So yeah, maybe we need a trip. Maybe we need a work trip kind of Yeah, let's go on a work trip to California. Dreaming. Yes. So it's like ⁓ she I think they said it's just a little bit outside LA. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. You never know. Might find myself over there one day. See you there. Yeah, see ya there. It's really far away. Yeah. It's far away. It's a long way. But we're a long way from everywhere, right? That's true. But it's like a fourteen hour flight from here to there. And then you got the drive on the other end as well. ⁓ that's that's a lot. Mm. Anyway, keep dreaming. Yes. Yeah, do we what I just wonder if it's any other tips we want to get? ⁓ yes. Did you use any other labels? ⁓ yeah, I used the two labels on the back, the fancy pants labels, which I'm not allowed to talk about. Mm-hmm. 'Cause it's from something not A secret that's coming out at the end of the year that you open every day before Christmas. So so this is gonna come out before then? No, it's not. I'm not meant to be using it and talking about it. Okay, so when so it didn't happen. I mean, if you listen to the podcast, you get a little sneaky. Yes. You get some sneak peeks that you're not meant to have. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. And ⁓ then I use self-made on the other pocket. Cool. Just in case if someone's walking from behind, they can see. Fancy pants and self made. I love it. What about you? I feel really bad. ⁓ no. Because I forgot to put one in. But I did put one in this one. Me made. ⁓ me made definition. I need to I I actually am at the point where I need to ⁓ just sort of like upgrade my labels a little bit. I think need to come come shopping. Well I sell them myself, so I need to actually go and raid my stock is what I need to go and do. Well, yeah. Come come over one day and have a coffee and then we'll ⁓ Get you s set up with some new labels to play to play with. I the ones I've got I love. ⁓ but th I do keep using the same ones, you know, like handmade, meme, you know, which so I'm like, I feel like you always got all these really cool ones that I need to Yes. Yeah. I need to branch out more. I definitely have some s some things that you can have that we can't talk about. Okay. ⁓ I'm excited. Yeah. Yeah. But the cat one, that that one is available and I can talk about that. That is fine. Buy the cat label or talk yay, cat labels. Yeah. They're very popular. Cool. And maybe one day, if people ask for it enough, we'll have a dog later. Yeah, it's gotta be a dog. It's gotta be a little caboodle. If there's a little caboodle face in there somehow. A little cavoodle face. Okay. I'll see what I can do. I don't know what I'm gonna put that in, but like dog clothes. ⁓ there's gotta be somebody making You don't just make d clothes for your dog. It's just about you loving your dog. Yeah, true. That is true. Absolutely, and I do love my dog. Yeah. I wonder if more sewists are dog people or cat people? I I'm gonna guess cat people. Let us know. What do you I think cat people too because I think that dogs take you away from sewing. Agreed. Because you gotta take ⁓ out, walk ⁓ gotta walk ⁓ You gotta play with ⁓ all the time. They want more attention. Cats only want attention when they want attention. Yeah. And that's like very good for a sewing person. I've got a ⁓ kite panic question for you. Okay. And I feel like we might have covered it, but I Don't remember if you answered this or not. Did you make any alterations to yours? N no. I only well, I made the pocket a little bit bigger at the back, just by two seven. Is that you fine? Yeah, I wasn't sure. I just figured bigger pockets can't go wrong. It's not gonna hurt. Yeah. and what size did you make? I made the small, but I should have made the extra small. Yeah. It's got a really good size range. Yeah, it has. Which we'll mention in the ratings. But yeah, so I It goes from extra, extra small, which is quite good. Yeah. Like 'cause usually I'm making the fur like up to Yeah. It goes to five XL, I think. Yeah. We'll come back to that as you say in the ratings. Yeah, the only thing I changed was I think I probably took a top six XL. Six XL, there you go. Yeah. ⁓ I took a little bit more length off of mine, so it's slightly more cropped, 'cause I knew I'd probably wear them with like sandals and things. And then I definitely took quite a bit out of the crotch on just this pair. Yeah. I think I would take more out of the crotch on the next pair, but actually I was saying to Sally, it feels like the crotch is a little bit low and she said, It looks great and I yeah, well go with that. I I they do feel like really comfy, kinda like home pants almost, you know. I don't know if I'd I wouldn't wear these out like in a s to a smart kind of environment. I w I I feel like they're more like chilling pants. Yeah, 'cause it's elastic waist, right? And I think that's what does it, right? The elastic waist. But then also that's a really good entry point for people that are, you know, making their first pair of pants. Yes. You want to start with elasticated waist. Because they'll be wearable. Yeah. Because if you make the other kind of pant with a zipper and s first of all, there's like a lot of fluffing around with that. ⁓ it's doable, but then you get to the end and if it doesn't fit then you've done all you know There's not too much you can do about it. Exactly. But ⁓ I w well one other thing I guess I did is I did a deeper hem. I love a deeper hem. It's certainly because I'm short and I didn't alter the pattern at all. And I Is that d is that a ⁓ tw double line of stitching? Well I did do a double line of stitching just because it just matches the stitching on the back pockets. I really enjoyed doing those curved back pockets. You know when you like have to turn the curve and you're pressing it and you're just getting it all nice and perfect. And then when you top stitch that, it's just nice. Do you ever take any notches out of the back pocket so it sits you know when you you know when you c have to curve it around and you turn it in? And you can do like a stitching line to give you a guideline, like it says in the instructions. But then when you fold it in, sometimes the fabric kind of folds on top of itself. Do you ever snip those little triangles out? I didn't, because this fabric's not that thick. I didn't And also didn't overlock the inside of the pockets, like it's said to. No true. Yeah. Not necessarily. I I did do that. I and I found that gave me a bet a slightly better curve, which was good. So Yeah, I just find that that kind of thing just like oddly satisfying, just you know, perfecting that. There's other ways of doing it. Like you could do like a s a thread, you could do like some basting stitches and then pull it like how you're gathering it just to kind of have you done that way? I've done it that way before. And then another way you could do it is you could ⁓ make a cardboard template. Yes. And then you could just iron over that And again though if you've still got the thicker fabric you might want to just take it just carefully don't go straight right up to the fold line but just take a little bit of excess out. Yeah and you do do that line of stitches too so then that would stop too much like fraying. True. But yeah, I just I don't know. Just some little details. Just make just just like zing. Yeah. In my brain. And I was like, I like this. I did the top stitching and I used a stitch on my machine that wasn't just a straightforward. It was one of the w you when it goes back, it like does a double and then but it takes so long. So I'm c I was kinda glad that I did it, but also a little bit, you know, when you're just like it was just like chugging along and taking three times the amount of time. So did you just use regular thread? No, I used denim thread. ⁓ okay. And that did that type of stitch. And I did that type of top stitch. Yeah, I know what you're talking about. So they're really long Seams and there's a lot of ⁓ So yeah, that would have just been like one step forward, one step back. And I think when you're top stitching, it's really important to press or open that seam really good. Because it's again if particularly if it's thick. So Yeah. Cool. Right. Well, shall we do the ratings? Yes, I think I think so. First category is sizing. And I was very impressed. It goes from extra, extra small, which is way smaller than me. And then ⁓ to six XL, which is Larger than most of the patterns that we do. ⁓ That's impressive. So we're gonna give it five plus. Yeah, five plus plus. I I mean I could make these for my kids almost, you know. That's that's impressive. Yeah. and the instructions. They're very good. Very good. Very clear. Yep. Yeah. And they have they have lots of resources as well. I mean, it's a simple pattern. So, you know But the instructions were really clear, lots of resources. I think we have to give it a five. Yes. ⁓ price. Yes, it's ⁓ average price, so two dollar signs. Yeah, two dollar signs. ⁓ and drafting. I mean, it all came together really well. The notches on that side panel, if you follow it all really well, it all fitted beautifully. Yeah. It wasn't very it was ov it was f fairly simple. Simple, yeah. Four? Yeah. Okay, awesome. Four. All right. We've got to give it our sewing club stamps now, Kylie. How many sewing club stamps? We're gonna give it four and a half sewing sewing club stamps. Woo! Great pattern. Yeah, great pattern. Thank you. And a reminder that you can get this pattern from the Matchy Matchy Sewing Club website with the discount sewing club podcast. Yeah. And that's the same for all of our ⁓ reviews. And next month. We get to sew something special ⁓ from our sponsor, which is the Fold Line. And the Fold Line have let us do the shopping on their massive range of patterns from all different pattern companies. And we got to choose our own pattern to sew, which I we're not gonna say now. It's gonna be a surprise. Surprise. ⁓ so yeah, if you're looking for a big range of patterns to choose from, like check out the fold line and we'll be back next month to talk about our e experiences. Yeah, it's exciting. It's exciting to have a company sponsoring us as well. So fold line. Yeah, excited to get going with that. Woohoo. So we get to talk about two patterns. Yeah. Two different patterns. We are confused. Very different patterns. They are very different. Very different. But very us as well. I was Yeah, exactly. Exactly. We'll see you next time. See next time. Bye. Yeah.
